STATE CHAMPION

Michael Gallagher

St. Mary Central Catholic High School Crowns 1st Swimming State Champion

By most standards, one hundred years is a long time. While St. Mary Central Catholic High School has been educating the best and brightest students our area has to offer for over one hundred years, it is hard to believe that in the year 2010 our students are still accomplishing feats that are “firsts” in our school’s history.

Senior Michael Gallagher accomplished the latest “first” as he not only became the first Panther swimmer to win a State title, but also earned a bronze medal in the 100 backstroke and also set the State record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:52.53. As far as successful weekends go, Michael set the bar pretty high.

When Michael and his State qualifying teammates: Danny DeChant, Matt Stahl, Ben Shenigo, and James Alexakos returned to Sandusky, they were welcomed back to “the Den” by a large group of supporters comprised of students, parents, school officials, and even City and County Commissioners Dan Kaman and Bill Monaghan.
In his speech during the reception, Michael excited the crowd saying: “This medal is for everyone here [at SCCS]. This is to show that we’re not closing. We are only getting better.”

Congratulations to Michael and his relay teammates: Danny DeChant, Matt Stahl, Ben Shenigo, and James Alexakos.
