Enjoy a good book!

Hey Kids! Don't let your mind turn to mush over the long, lazy summer break.  Pick up a good book and feed the brain.  To help you along that path, the crack faculty at Sandusky Central Catholic School has "recommended" some of their favorites for you to read on the beach.

Actually, these readings are mandatory and your efforts will be assessed. Students must choose one of the books listed below for their grade level. Honors students must choose two books. If you have questions regarding the book or the project, please contact the appropriate grade level teacher no later than Friday, August 5, 2011.

All students must keep a journal for each book. Journal entries are to be completed 1/3 through book, 2/3 through and at the end; write 1-2 pages about theme, character development, and application to modern day living. Journals should be word processed (typed), double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font. Journals will be due the first day of school, Tuesday, August 30, 2011.

In addition to a journal, students must choose one of the following for each book read: Scrapbook, Power Point or Poster Board.
Scrapbook – 10 pages depicting main events, themes, characters, settings, information on author, reflections and/or critiques. Should be neat but can be 3-dimensional. Be creative and be ready to share.
Power point – 10-12 slides using bullet points, pictures, graphs (NO PARAGRAPHS). Should portray main events, characters, theme, setting, reflection, and/or information on author. Print out notes/handout to turn in.
Poster board Newspaper (22 x 28) –Should contain headlines, main story, and a selection of feature articles, pictures with captions, character profiles, obituaries, human interest stories, letters to the editor, editorials etc. Should be typed and should be visually appealing – may use color. (See USA Today for ideas)
The Scrapbook, PowerPoint or Poster board will be due on the 3rd day of school, Thursday, August 25, 2011

In addition to the assignments above, students should also be prepared to complete a subjective test upon returning to school. Honors students will be required to complete journal entries and a project for each of the two books chosen. If there are any questions or concerns regarding the completion of the Summer Reading assignments, please contact the teacher of the course by Friday, August 5, 2011.

If you should click on the links below and travel to Amazon.com and actually purchase one of the Summer Reading Program books SCCS will receive up to 15% of the proceeds from any purchases you make.
